Chefs James Syhabout, Dominique Crenn, Joshua Skenes and “the new generation of international chefs”–as organizers somewhat mysteriously put it–are planning dinners and cooking demonstrations in the Presidio and in a handful of Bay Area restaurants.
James Syhabout of Oakland’s Commis and Hawker Fare restaurants took part in the 2010 Omnivore festival in Deauville, France, where he worked with young chefs Jeremiah Stone and Fabian Von Hauske. The two chefs, who are due to open Contra soon in New York, will join Syhabout for a dinner during the San Francisco Omnivore Festival at Commis on November 9.
“It’s a celebration of young culinary talent,” says Syhabout of the festival. “It brings out a lot of young, enthusiastic chefs.”
Dominique Crenn will also host an Omnivore dinner on November 9 at her restaurant, Atelier Crenn, with chef Davy Schellemans of Veranda in Anvers, Belgium, while Jason Fox will host a November 11 dinner at Commonwealth in San Francisco.
Classes will start on Saturday, November 10 at the Presidio’s Observation Post with cooking demonstrations from local chefs like Danny Bowien of Mission Chinese Food and Corey Lee of Benu, ending with a dance party that night.
Past Omnivore festivals have starred the likes of David Kinch of Manresa, Rene Redzepi and Ferran Adría and have been credited with unveiling unknown talent like Sweden’s now internationally known Magnus Nilsson, who happens to be coming to the Bay Area this week.
